Visit:
Participants must come to M. D. Anderson for a total of seven visits: a
screening and orientation visit, a visit one week prior to the quit date, a
visit on the day they quit, and follow-up visits at 2, 4, 8, and 26 weeks after
the quit date.

NicotineHome Care:All participants will receive Nicoderm Patch therapy for 6 weeks, self-help
material, and counseling sessions.

Intervention:
The goal of this behavioral research study is to look at psychosocial and
behavioral factors that influence the process of quitting smoking.

Study Objectives / Outcomes
The objectives of this project are to:
1. Examine the influence of race/ethnicity on the intrapersonal and contextual determinants/antecedents of daily experience, temptations, and smoking lapses among African American (AA), Hispanic, and white smokers during a quit attempt.
2. Examine the influence of race/ethnicity on the intrapersonal and contextual determinants/antecedents of daily experience, temptations, and smoking occasions among AA, Hispanic, and white smokers while smoking ad lib.
3. Examine the influence of individual differences on the intrapersonal and contextual determinants/antecedents of daily experience, temptations, and smoking lapses among AA, Hispanic, and white smokers during a quit attempt; as well as whether these factors mediate or moderate the impact of race/ethnicity.
4. Examine the influence of individual differences on the intrapersonal and contextual determinants/antecedents of daily experience, temptations, and smoking occasions among AA, Hispanic, and white smokers while smoking ad lib; as well as whether these factors mediate or moderate the impact of race/ethnicity.
5. Examine the influence of race/ethnicity on standard questionnaire assessments both pre- and postcessation.
6. Examine the relations of relapse status with race/ethnicity, individual differences and micro-level variables.

Enrollment Eligibility

Inclusion Criteria:1) age 21 or above

2) current smoker with a history of at least 5 cigarettes/day for the last year

3) motivated to quit within the next 30 days (preparation stage)

4) home address and a functioning home telephone number

5) can speak, read, and write in English at a sixth-grade literacy level.

Exclusion Criteria:1) contraindication for nicotine patch use

2) active substance abuse or dependence

3) regular use of tobacco products other than cigarettes (cigars, pipes, smokeless)

4) use of bupropion or nicotine replacement products other than the nicotine patches supplied by the study

5) another household member enrolled in the study.

6) Participation in a smoking cessation program or study during the past 90 days
