Project TALK will be a four-year program. The specific objectives of the project are to investigate the following questions: 1) Feasibility: Does a CD-ROM-based interactive multimedia tobacco intervention generate greater interest and increase effective use among youth at 7 days and 6 months compared to baseline ? 2) Mediating variables: Does the proposed intervention change mediating variables (e.g., self-efficacy, knowledge, functional meaning, normative beliefs, etc) associated with tobacco-use onset and cessation at 7 days and 6 months compared to baseline? 3) Perceived Vulnerability: Does the intervention increase perceived tobacco-related health vulnerability at 7 days and 6 months compared to baseline? 4) Stages of Change: Does the proposed intervention have more significant impact on progression through the stages of smoking acquisition and cessation at 7 days and 6 months compared to baseline? 5) Impact (exploratory aim): Does the proposed intervention result in higher non-initiation among nonsmokers and cessation among smokers, measured as a composite measure at 6 months compared to baseline?
