Description/
Intervention:
The goal of this research study is to collect and store patients' clinical
information. This will help researchers learn more about the causes of cancer
and ways to treat and prevent cancer. Researchers may use what is learned to
develop new medicines, new methods of treatment, and new ways of preventing
cancer.
.
Study Objectives / Outcomes
1. To prospectively collect standardized core epidemiologic data on patients who are being seen at LBJ Hospital with a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of cancer or with a risk of cancer (e.g., elevated PSA, BPH).
2. To collect information yearly on recurrence and survival as well as the proportion of patients who remain in follow-up in the clinic after initial cancer care.
3. To develop a DNA/serum bank that will enable us to pursue molecular epidemiologic and translational studies in this unique patient population.
4. To provide research infrastructure for our medical oncology fellows for the development of research projects that would expand their knowledge of underserved populations and the potential barriers to research in this group of patients.
5. To document the patients' symptoms at presentation using the M. D. Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI) or, for male urology patients only, the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC).
