Description/
Intervention:
The goal of this research study is to learn about how prosocial behaviors may
develop in children with NF-1 and to determine if there is a difference in the
development of prosocial behaviors between individuals with NF-1 and
individuals with ADHD (without NF-1).
.
Study Objectives / Outcomes
Primary: To determine if children and adolescents with neurofibromatosis, type-1 (NF1) have deficits in social skills
Secondary: To determine if their social skills development is related to age, disease severity, or specific cognitive skills.

Enrollment Eligibility
If you do not meet the enrollment eligibility, there may be other treatment options for you.
Please Contact the
Referral Office
for more information.
Inclusion Criteria:
1) Children and adolescents diagnosed with neurofibromatosis, type 1 (NF) (for the experimental group) or diagnosed with ADHD (for the comparison group)
2) 8 to 18 years old
3) English speaking
4) Ability to read at the 3rd grade level at minimum (Essentially, the participant needs to be able to read the questionnaire on his or her own.)
Exclusion Criteria:
1) Children who are home schooled or in full-time special education classrooms (may not have same opportunities for social development)
2) Legally blind or visual impairment not correctable with lenses
3) Children who have been treated with cranial irradiation
4) Children with an IQ <70. If a child in the ADHD group (to be recruited from schools) does not have an IQ test on record, then failing scores on both math and reading TAKS will suffice in lieu of an IQ score.
5) Children who have autism or an emotional disturbance (ED; a category used in school for special education services), as having either of these conditions precludes a normal social skills development
