Study Objectives / Outcomes
Baylor College of Medicine has a subcontract with UTMDACC to recruit and enroll patients for this pilot study. All data collection will be completed at Baylor/Thomas Street Clinic and Thomas Street Pharmacy in accordance with BCM IRB. The role of Dr. Suarez-Alamzor and UTMDACC staff will be to evaluate the data after it is collected. All patients will be informed as part of informed consent that de-identified data and their private health information (also de-identified) will be analyzed at UTMDACC under the direction of Dr. Suarez-Almazor and her research staff.
Objective 1: To assess qualitative data collected by Baylor College of Medicine through focus groups. The information from this evaluation will be used to develop a social marketing intervention to improve adherence to highly active anti-retroviral treatment (HAART) among HIV patients at the Thomas Street Clinic. Dr. Suarez-Almazor will receive the data from the BCM research team and will conduct a qualitative analysis.
Objective 2: To test the impact of the intervention on adherence to HAART. Dr. Suarez-Almazor will use data collected by the BCM research team and provided by the Thomas Street Pharmacy to evaluate the efficacy of the social marketing intervention. Refill data for 6-months pre-intervention and 6-month post-intervention for all patients (approximately 2000) utilizing the Thomas Street Pharmacy that filled at least one presciption will be evaluated. Data will be de-identified prior to transfer to UTMDACC. To further test the efficacy of the intervention, self-report HAART adherence data from 500 patients (collected by BCM investigators) will be analyzed by Dr. Suarez-Almazor and her research team.
