1. To conduct in-depth qualitative assessment of the overall needs, knowledge, expectations, and concerns of these subpopulations of survivors of breast cancer and survivor-recipients of bone marrow or stem cell transplants
2. To use this information to develop a quantitative survey to identify their
a. current health care utilization patterns;
b. perceived health care needs; and
c. knowledge and information needs concerning their disease and its late effects.
Data collected in the focus groups and interviews will be used to create a questionnaire that will be used for the second phase of the study. A second protocol will be submitted once that questionnaire has been created to seek approval of the questionnaire and procedures for the second phase.
The objectives of our study are to evaluate the healthcare and information needs of adult cancer survivors. Due to the diversity in demographics, survival and therapy across the various cancer types, two very distinct groups of patients were chosen for this proposal to initiate research: Survivors of breast cancer and survivor-recipients of bone marrow or stem cell transplants (BMT/SCT).
Throughout their lifespan, both groups of survivors can clearly expect increased burden of illness arising from the late effects of their therapy despite survival. Our overall goal is to identify their needs so that comprehensive programs can be developed to enhance their quality of life as survivors. |
