Description/
Intervention:
The goal of this research study is to learn if the pain experienced by cancer
patients in 3 different cancer treatment centers in Vietnam is being managed
well by the doctors in these centers. The types of treatment for pain given by
these centers will also be compared. Another goal is to examine the
relationship between the type of care given for pain by doctors and the
doctor's knowledge and attitude toward opioid drug use.
.
Study Objectives / Outcomes
1. To determine the proportion of patients with moderate to severe pain in three geographically distinct cancer treatment centers in Vietnam (the National Cancer Institute, Hospital K, Hanoi; a small district hospital, Hue General Hospital, Hue; and a large, urban general hospital, ChoRey Central Hospital, Ho Chi Minh).
2. To examine the relationship between pain and other cancer-related symptoms.
3. To determine the extent of appropriate cancer pain treatment as measured by the pain management index in these centers and to determine variations by treatment centers.
4. To examine the relationship between adequacy of pain treatment and physician characteristics (attitudes toward opioid use, knowledge and training in the management of pain and other symptoms), and to explore variations in these relationships by treatment centers.
5. To determine predictors of pain undertreatment in these centers.
