Description/
Intervention:
The goal of this research study is to learn if viewing an interactive,
computer-based, educational piece on banking sperm before cancer treatment will
increase men's knowledge about cancer and infertility or change men's opinions
about banking sperm.
.
Study Objectives / Outcomes
Objectives This R25/R44 project aims to develop a browser-based interactive media product (viewable on the worldwide web or from a CD-ROM) to promote banking sperm before cancer treatment. The product will have three segments: 1) a didactic segment to educate oncology physicians on sperm banking, 2) a segment teaching oncology physicians how to counsel patients about sperm banking, and 3) a segment to educate patients and their family members about sperm banking. We plan to demonstrate that using our product :
1) increases physicians' knowledge about sperm banking,
2) increases patients' knowledge about this option, and
3) increases the utilization of sperm banking within oncology care settings.

Enrollment Eligibility
If you do not meet the enrollment eligibility, there may be other treatment options for you. Please Contact the Referral Office for more information.

Inclusion Criteria:1) Physician Pilot Study: Any fellow or resident at UTMDACC may participate.

2) Patient Pilot Study: Any male patient age 14 to 45 about to begin cancer treatment that could impair his fertility may participate. Patients within the first week of such treatment are also eligible.

3) Patient Final Evaluation study: Male patients aged 14 to 45 at MDACC who have a recent cancer diagnosis, have not yet begun treatment, and will have a treatment that could potentially impair fertility.

4) Health Care Professional Final Evaluation Study: All faculty, fellows, physicians assistants, and master's-degree nurses in patient care areas treating men aged 14 to 45 are eligible to participate.

Exclusion Criteria:1) For patients under 18, parental verbal permission will be solicited before discussing the study with the patient. Parents will be given a list of sensitive topics included in the intervention. A boy under 18 cannot participate without formal parental informed consent.

2) All participants must be able to speak and read English well enough to understand the materials.

3) Patients under age 14 cannot participate because they may be physically too immature to collect sperm, and also because 14 is a commonly accepted age of assent for health care decisions.

4) Patients over age 45 cannot participate because although a few may be interested in sperm banking, they do not represent the typical population of patients who choose this option.

5) We will ask the treating medical team for permission to approach all eligible patients, and will not invite those they feel are too ill or inappropriate for the study.
