| Christopher J. Logothetis, MD
Research Interests:
Neuroendocrinology, prostatic neoplasms, genetic markers |
The primary focus of my research has been prostatic carcinomas and their treatment. With Dr. Naseema Hoosein, I have validated clinical biologic markers for prostate cancer. In collaboration with Dr. Sue-Hwa Lin (Department of Molecular Pathology), I have developed specific gene-therapy approaches for prostatic carcinoma. A trial of preoperative p53 gene therapy is under way. We have elucidated the specific function of the c-cell-adhesion molecule and have studied it in vivo. On the basis of these data, we hope to proceed soon with clinical application in collaboration with Drs. Curtis Pettaway and Louis Pisters (Department of Urology). In addition to targeting bone metastasis with Dr. Shi-Ming Tu (this department), I have proposed organ-specific therapy with bone-homing radiopharmaceuticals. We hope this approach will allow us to develop effective treatments for prostatic carcinoma.
I am continuing to direct the development of new combination cytotoxic therapies in advanced prostate cancer. This effort includes an important phase III trial in which our 4-drug regimen plus androgen ablation will be compared with androgen ablation alone as the initial treatment for nonlocalized prostate cancer. Another major focus will be the development of a strategy for the integration of this therapy in a successful approach to the treatment of prostate cancer.
In collaboration with Dr. Danai Daliani (this department), we have established a new clinical model for testing novel strategies in high-risk patients prior to prostatectomy.
